Effect of dry air on human body

People can easily distinguish the cold and heat of their environment, but the air humidity cannot be clearly perceived. We can't give immediate feedback on the water content of the air we breathe into our lungs or in contact with our skin and body.

However, air humidity will have a significant impact on us. If we are in extreme environment for a long time, it may cause damage.

Dry air draws water from any source it comes into contact with, including our bodies. Water can evaporate from our eyes, skin, hair, nails and any other body surface. This dehydration may initially cause discomfort, such as eye soreness or contact lens irritation, but it may also lead to more serious symptoms, such as dry skin, itching and dermatitis.

What's more, it affects our respiratory and immune systems. When the relative humidity of the air we breathe is less than 40%, the mucous membranes in the nose, throat and bronchus will become dry, and these elements play a vital role in our body's resistance to airborne pollutants (such as viruses and bacteria).

These moist mucous membranes trap airborne particles before they enter our lungs. Tiny hairs called cilia transport these contaminants to our throats, which are then coughed up or swallowed and destroyed. This process is called mucociliary clearance.

When our mucous membranes become dry, this natural defense mechanism will be inhibited, making us more vulnerable to airborne viruses and bacteria.
